officially to the 2020-21 school year so you guys are part of History the first part of history is that is the first time in 20 years we've ever had to do it this way so you know where the first but you definitely are the first and then secondly we are actually turning 20 years old this year so you are as an incoming classes to that will be celebrating 20th anniversary 20 20 20 21 on two levels you guys are special so what we going to try to do to keep it very cold normally would have a nice you know event for you at the school and all this fabulous cross but for right now we just have to get to know each other in the dimension away and then make up for it in a big way when we get back into the building so one of things I want to do first is just try to introduce my staff that's on the on the zoom my screen looks different from everyone else's but I know on my left I have my principal. Johnson hello hi my name is Artie Johnson I'm the principal here at wpaces and I would like to welcome you all to our new parent and student orientation so I'm so when did actor Lee about Evan defense Olympian I really think they the great idea so if you want to take new you back weekend and Doctor Johnson will be checking the chat throughout the session so if you have any questions put it in the chat and it will be causing throughout the session answer your questions along the way so don't feel that you have to unmute cuz we will give me a chance to see if you can't understand your question will definitely say hey we're not sure what you said YouTube. What you said good that being said I seemed to my right as soon as Lucy hi Miss Lucy secretary at the school this is my tenth year and I would like to say welcome to everyone hello all right and then Dennis Kelly hello I'm Sarah Kelly on the coordinator of special education and I was just like the walking you to the 2021 school year right Miss Washington show everybody my name is Miss Parkinson I am the school counselor at wpaces is my 11 year and I look forward to working with all of you and coming year Miss Morgan no I am Greta Morgan I am new to territory Haitian I will be working with the kindergarten class specifically with Miss Tom Thumb welcome to all the parents and families okay so everybody showed up on the second screen okay so I have a doctor call hey guys I'm dr. colomer Direct specialized Services I'll be helping out with special ed I was Behavioral Services 504 along with Miss Kelly and I'm glad everyone's here in a way bigger than us have missed a little hello everybody my name is quatina Littles I'm the director of administration and then I work alongside dr. Phyllis the CEO and I am this is my 19 year at wpaces so I am here to assist you I'm with all of your needs and we're fabulous and we work with fabulous parents so I'm excited that you are joining our our family welcome alright thank you for that Miss Little's all right I see Doctor Williams just popped up there okay that I am the director of curriculum instruction professional development and I'm just so happy to see all the new pants and all the new students this is my 14th year or 15 years at wpaces I'm not sure I lost count your body alright next on my screen is Miss Evans Irvin sorry mr. oven so sorry Miss Irvin evening everyone welcome parents my name is Miss Irvin and I will be the kindergarten teacher for K1 I just want to say welcome I'm glad that you chose us we are wonderful school year you can look forward to dedicate their again or party welcome and I look forward to working with you all right thank you Miz Irving and I will tell you I'm in Irving was here with us in first grade last year that's why she's about to say 1 something right on that I'm like nope I'm Kay so good job is Irving Doctor Phillips in and out simply because I'm doing other things no problem may not be on here okay but I know you can hear it thank you okay I see that you're next everyone I miss Tom one of the kindergarten teacher alright McKenzie my name is Megan Kenzie I've been teaching at uses for a while and I'm the k-3 teacher I'm super excited I know I have a couple returning families coming this year so I'm excited too kind of Rican and super excited to me everybody who isn't into me thank you so much I see Misty are you there I'm here all right I'm not Garden this year but I am new to be pieces so I just want to say hi to see all of you around alright so did I get all the staff cuz the screen jumping when is people logged in so if I did not get all the staff and there's anybody on just jump right on in and introduce yourselves to our new parents all right I got everybody that's good I am going to start off with just talking a little bit about wpaces are you know our history we got here and pretty much on mission and vision so he started I actually started 21 years ago but we actually got our first child 20 years ago and the idea was basically to expand a preschool that we had started three years ago I into a place where we can can can you doing what we do with kids and that's kind of taking our students and giving them the opportunity to grow in their own unique way pretty much if I if we can take them we're going to take a while to get them as far as we can ultimately when they leave us in peace grade you want them to be ready for any challenge that may come to them whether it's the Challenger Middle School or what is the challenge of you know navigating I don't want to take you because most of them are left but yes puberty at so many things that our students will be handling what by the time they are required to leave us we want to give them that first good home the nurturing place where they can make mistakes and Learn and Grow be corrected and all those kind of things to between the ages of 5 and 12 we're going to be doing a lot of that so we started off by saying that we are going to be partners in this this raising of the children so we all will have to have that communication will have to have that understanding and mission and vision of the goals of what you want for your child and also what wpaces want to see from or for your job so we are are in Technology Square Chanel so we're going to be definitely focusing on Arts and Technology integration so we ask that you participating all the things that we ask you to participate in when it comes to the Arts and Technology but before Arts and Technology this year we really have to focus in the four Core Curriculum areas and that is social studies science reading and math and this year is different from every other year is because we have just a one way out there to way to means of communicating with you and or right now and that's this corner right here and the email and so one thing we need to make sure everybody does it keep your information up-to-date so if you change your email if you change your phone number if you want to add somebody I recommend that you have as many folks on that email cheering as you can Mom Dad Grandma my neighbor everyone because that is our main source of communication we won't have the means to call everyone all the time but we will be able to email everyone all the time so just keep up with your emails will try to make it so that is not inundating you I'm in that way we give you an email you know it's important not you know what I tell you what the weather is today we're going to make sure it's something that we really need to get across to you so and if you haven't done that so far Miss Lucy I saw her hair cut like that I guess keep your information update she is our point of contact for that and your teacher also be the point that we are going to talk in a little bit about the curriculum and then we'll kind of go in to talk more about this some of the official think so talk about would be like okay uniform them fussing and things like that have to do with that right now that our website is where we post most of the stated information that we have so when things changed go fix the website we updated so we started off with thinking we were coming into the school and we were going to be doing a hybrid model where couple of days of school in a couple of days at home and that quickly changed to now over. Now we hope that we can get ourselves back into the building after the new year so that's the plan to be online or we have until the end of the calendar year which is I guess I think it's around the 22nd 23rd I'll have the calendar in front of me will go for Holiday our winter break and then when we come back from our winter break we hope to be able to transition back into the building but we will no way in advance if that's going to have that will be making that decision on what's happening with covid-19 Clover 19 is where we live OK everybody new shoes go thank you find them. TJ she's welcome you don't keep your ear to the ground with regards to what's happening in our state with covid-19 and more specifically in Philadelphia because that's really where we're going to be taking all of her information from so I do have some folks on the line that I'm going to start to come and share a little bit about our curriculum and that's going to be dr. William so she's going to talk to you guys in conjunction possum Johnson with our Core Curriculum it's okay as I talk with Kenzie could say when and where we're doing it in kindergarten if works for you cuz you are finalized some things today or almost finalized them so I liked it you said the four curriculum areas so the first area is literacy everybody mad the word literacy it's not just reading it's reading writing speaking listening so we do it and now the terms are received really incorporates digital literacy literacy has gotten bigger than when we in school perhaps and so we have a core piece of work we use which is called wonders and if you go on the website you will see the curriculum listed on the creek that maybe at the end we can show that Miss Kinsey why don't you just talk for me in about how we're going to do our literacy curriculum engine guard okay as feel free to attend of jumping in and still our day will be getting around 8:30 everybody and have some morning work and perhaps like a virtual response for the students to respond to especially in the beginning while we are to get to know everybody will have a morning meeting and a brain break and are literacy block will start approximately 9:45 will do a whole group lesson with a story and like a big learning Target for the week students can identify setting maybe like the big Target throughout the week and then we'll break off at the beginning I think at the beginning we're going to try to spend some time slowly building up their stamina for screen time and also making sure that they know how to play cuz I'm open up a new tab and things like that but once we get going and then afterwards we'll follow up with small group Live less than all the other students are either working on something from their literacy kit which is going to be filled with things that we sent home to you or in our virtual classroom with the kindergarten teachers are working on developing and we'll go for about an hour from 9:45 to 10:45 and of course we'll just breaks cuz we know they're five and so I'm some brain breaks will have some movement breaks will will break especially in the beginning more than at the end so that's our math curriculum is basically everyday math and it's web web page you can click I'm actually an everyday math has a nice overview but it's a spiral curriculum is just like all the curriculum has except when you came to school when you just had one Topic at a time Everyday Math believes that you do a copper can you keep coming back to it so we have been working on how this will do virtually cuz of course we're all learning this virtual world and so Mackenzie was playing a little bit of our math how it work the mass setup is going to be essentially the same kind of model with the literacy where we'll meet around 10:45 and we'll do the whole roof last in a little bit different different big learning Target each day so we'll do a whole group lesson with that and then the same thing we will break off into small groups while the other students again or either working in our virtual classroom or with materials from will be providing perfect so I'm a science which is really important we have to change a bit because our science Core Curriculum work it with what kind of Hands-On things in school so we are switching to something called science studies weekly which has at least every week and experiments you can do at home so we believe that children should be scientist not just learning about science so we give you heads up in terms of what will be done maybe Fridays simple things that you have in your house and if you don't I'm sure we'll be able to work with it but it is based on the National Science standards all of our friendship was based on the standard and we're going to see how this works because just like you we had to switch out there and find some things that would work virtually so that is our science and social studies we have actually we have a series that we think will work virtually is a series of big books and it gives activities for children to do again to think about and it will be either science or social studies everyday and that is on the web page to our kindergarten social studies will stay the same every class they have art using technology Performing Arts and you will get a schedule of that not everybody has everything but your child will have some special every day so I think that's it that's the Phillips that I leave out I will have a closing Circle we like closing Circle where the children can say this is what work today just what didn't work where am I who am I who are you and what we got to work all that out so that's our curriculum and instruction I think I don't think it's up to date we just finished today as a draft so would you like to explain this destruction today that we just described let me see it I'll tell you if it's the most up-to-date that's not the most up-to-date EXO it's it's not but at the time frames are kind of similar okay so that's what we described we went through the whole day so moms and dads and grandmas and everybody else on the line you will get this once it's finalized you will get a copy of this so you can put it on your refrigerator you can share with your family members in basic you might want to tattoo this to the back of your kid you'll be at your have this to follow on I have a student he's going into eleventh grade and if I could put it on his forehead on the schedule for the day underweight but this is going to be very valuable until you get to remember when you log in when you log off those kind of things you want to hold onto the schedule so you will get a copy it will come to email and you can print it out all you can eat on your phone you know it'll be very handy so you you can be on schedule with what your students required to do throughout the day question questions going to chair it's not a question in Jeopardy question and check and they were going to pause before you read out everything can I wait for this question there are no questions in there as of yet so we can wait for this question to come all right sounds like this little wanted a dinner time in yes I just wanted to add you may have seen on the schedule that we also have times where students get pulled out for a specialized services any student who may be coming in with an early intervention plan if you haven't already shared that please share that with the school because those students May will need to be evaluated for an IEP if they qualify there is time in the schedule for them to receive their their special education services and there's also times in a block for our counseling to do push in lessons and also I'm pulling laxantes well and should be in a think the messages in the questions in the chat and all right yes questions first question is when is the first day of school so the first year who is September 8th and there was a parent letter that went out last week so if you did not receive the parent letter can you please put your email address in your name in the check we will make sure that we get that out to you that did explained start DND expectations I want to make sure that every parent I'm still receive that information but yes September 8th is the start date for students and that's a Johnson if you can find the parent letter while we're talking that be good we can share the screen so any parent. Didn't see if they can at least we can read it out to them now and what I would also talk to you all about since I have at least that's over 50% of the parent meet make yourself so we normally would have our garden students come in from small groups in the beginning of the school year they will come in five at a time and they would have intimate time with their teacher before they get into map of all 25 or so students are at so we've been thinking about how we can thoughtfully do that keeping everybody safe but also recognizing that are coming in to school for the first time and we want to make sure that we make that impression on a 5 year olds that hey this is no longer daycare this is real school and and we want them to feel like this is real school so we wanted to try to do that small group where we will bring them into the school you will probably be on the sidewalk and the kids are walking up they'll meet their teacher probably short of an hour with their teacher socially also in in between the plexiglass tables are just so that they can get a feel for what looks like meet their teacher face to face and then once they did their one day a couple hours actually live with their teacher then they would go online before we put that into place the only one to get your feedback on that cuz I know some parents will be all over them you like your own for it and other parents be like now we have underlying conditions so if you could in the chat everyone just put a a y or n but that's something that we are interested in doing or we were just out of not doing it so why do you like to do that and an inferno not at this time it will give you a few minutes in a lot of lies ocean wise one parent acid repeat the question okay the question was was not a question it was just actually a plan for getting our children to understand that they are now in real school to to know what their school looks like on to potentially be online and not have ever seen your actual school or your classroom it kind of creates the fuzziness for our young people to be able to connect what are doing online here they might not say what is it sold out but if we give them the experience when they get to come to school for a few hours one day and meet their teacher and sitting a small group of kids there will be no more than 5 children at at with the teacher we would ask that you bring this your student up to the door you let him walk up we would take them from there you would do it this should we would do a screening with you so that you would actually do the screening for your students like if your skin has been coughing or any of those things those children wouldn't be able to come but we would do the first 5 days of school we would have a set of five students each day and then all the students within jump online and then who came on the same day with each other on the screen and then you have an instant community that you can build on a teacher can build on it as soon as you can build on it and I think that's a good way to start I believe just want to make sure that parents are feeling the same way but we don't want to make these kind of decisions in this covid-19 time without hearing back from you guys is that good enough dr. write down the or knows those parents and then we'll try to come up with a different way work with you to come up with a different way to help your student connect to someone somehow in an interface to think fashion if we can but if not then what we'll do is we will send out to do we have a schedule that we sent out an email to all the parents you will get your visitation day and the visitation day will basically be giving you strength this morning how that would be done it will probably start a Mackenzie and Williams pregnant on room do we start in the morning do morning and afternoon or do we do today typically the small group. items to be like 9 to 1 but I know that because of everything going on with covid-19 about shortening that so perhaps like a 2-hour block instead right so something more like say 9 to 11 yes and also some of the families who might be hesitant we also talked about wpaces has a few Outdoor Classroom so he talks about trying to do you know just like getting to know each other and bring the supplies outside as an option and we do have the face Shields and over the forehead and we do have the small children's mask so everybody will be required to do both and also if that if we would do the Outdoor Classroom which is a great idea image we all have lunch have those as a precaution we were just going to talk one-on-one with everybody and have you don't have a plan for every student I guess we should look you jacket look for that now. have your key back on that you should look for a schedule starting I would say Monday not that you going to start Monday but you got to see your schedule on Monday the first day of school is September 8th so the first smallest spy with come on September 8th in the second small group would be on the 9th of the day after the holiday and then and so on so far so the 1st at 2 maybe Thursday Friday by time we get to Friday we will have pretty much 90% of the small group students have visited us that Monday would be the last day for the small group and then the following Tuesday is going to be play my September calendar the following Tuesday September bear with me Tuesday so the Monday 15th is the first day that all students would then be back online for their first day of classes in teacher okay but you'll get that all done biking how do you spell the next thing on Ark on our calendar is dependents in some of the questions they will be learning via Zoom everyday yes they will be learning in the next question rules right into that about the time I'm still we do have it scheduled for 8:32 every time and again I will send this Miss Lucy trying to find the letter but it does I'm give information regarding the start time to start time is 8:30 in the letter and also let you know 845 our students are considered late and the questions and I'll go more in-depth of what the expectations are for I'm students being president I think Kenzie could ask her answer the question about being on Zoom all day 5 days a week 8:30 to 2:30 that's not our we know you're 5 and we know you can't do that so if you want to talk about the breaks and lunches brain breaks and I when we go out in the small groups will have the option either be hopefully you'll have the option to either be working in a virtual classroom which is something that I wear working to set up on reason likes go in and it's like a cartoon replica of our classroom they can click on different things to do or if they're kind of having we have we put together a little kids that have like manipulatives Play-Doh different things for them to work on so they can still be working on the skills we're working on in the classroom but in a more tangible way so it's not going to be constantly mme also break for lunch and they have special and then smok small X in the afternoon so it won't like don't worry it's not going to be like a big long stretch of them sitting in front of the screen and also I just want to interject that there's going to be requirement for the students to have on headphones so that's going to help with their concentration and if that's all you feel that they had enough Springtime you can put the screenshot screen down and they can still listen to the teacher headphones only on the screen so that would be one of the ways that you could find a limit some of the springtime especially if he has an issue or anything like that you see while we're going through the school year you can make it with adjustment but the headphones are going to definitely be mandatory and if you hadn't gone out and gotten them already are we will be able to supply headphones when we issue out the next question is the same is this the same layout for 4th grade as well I'm going to say not the small groups if that's what you're referring to as the fourth graders will not they will start on the 8th September 8th online with their teacher for kindergarten or we'll start on time the day after the holiday the next question is about uniforms do not have to wear uniforms online however they have to be fully dressed with the top and the bottom that is the expectation so no they don't have to wear the uniform top wpaces uniform top at home but they have to have a top and a bottom everyday the next question is will there be temperature checks prior prior to the students arrival is so I may think about it I'm not fully comfortable just yet somebody need to be muted and questioned just for clarity trying to see if the parent is saying that they're not comfortable if we temperature checks if so can you please clarify I'm sorry I'm not sure who I just talked to the question if you're not comfortable with us doing temperature checks you don't want your student at the school for small group please a question if that's what that was all just for clarification let's just say what are processes everyone will be getting a temperatures check and a screening amongst every single day that helps you to form a decision the students will be screened and receive a temperature check every single day that was answer to the question she wanted temperature check so that brings us to any more questions are a lot of repeats I think it was I'm sorry I'm sorry distributed this Friday again that was in that letter that was sent by know some people didn't receive it in the time so as soon as I have the letter I will provide you with the time before the end of this presentation until November December December do you guys know for a fact that is going to end in December the decision is going to be depending on covid-19 whatever is happening in December because that is flu season so we need this will be our first time going into flu season will have to follow the guidelines for the state of Pennsylvania Department of Education and also to see what's a god to where we are so we could all be in red in December which means most likely we're not going to be able to open up in January or we could be in yellow so we are trying to keep everybody from actually raising those numbers up I send them to school in September and October until November and December 10th to be more of the flu season so if we are doing well and the state says that we are eligible to move into the Ville but if there if we're in a situation where our numbers are skyrocketing and everybody's getting sick and it doesn't make good sense to move into the building because we won't be safe or we can store the safety of everybody they will stay online so did we just have to kind of stay just a little bit and there's a question about can you use your own laptop absolutely if you have your own laptop you do not have to use the school's laptop and will provide again if the suggestion would be headphones headphones Beacon Supply that as well The Weeknd I think I saw a questioning and it said how many times a day will we take the temperature I think I saw that one up initially we'll take it in the beginning of the day most likely we wouldn't take it throughout the day because anybody is going to be in the building especially our little guys for the first day and they're only going to be in our in our building it about an hour hour-and-a-half no more than 2 hours we know that if you take it in the beginning and it's good most likely will be good in the two hours after that we do have some special ed students are coming in the building that will be with us all day and if we see or we witness and symptoms that are indicative of Coke 19th we will do it and we will I'd like to see him until we are sure that that soon does not have covid-19 do we will make sure that that child is I'm either see my doctor or either tested flu season the one thing I want to talk about with regards to I want to go back while dr. Johnson is is gathering up as question I want to talk a little bit about learning space in the in the letter and I'm not sure if this came in the letter but if not you will get information about thinking now about where your child will be spending the majority of their time creating a learning space at home is what we are asking every parent to start to think about if you didn't do so already so if there's a space and at home that's more comfortable or that is a go to a table or a comfortable space dining room table or in the bedroom I'm just start to develop a area in your child's environment where they can go to for for their learning every day because there is going to be something that the pictures of going to want to have the students Post in the wall specially for a younger children so like your alphabet chart so there's going to be a a place in the wall where we want them to have a word wall when you start to build your words I'm just going to be things that we want happy endings to begin to put on their wall as reminders of this is what I'm learning and then there's things that we want them to put on the wall also like their student work I'm so that will become their little learning environment satellite for example if I turn my screen around is my little there's where I'm going to be for the next 10 months and so I have all my little things like my files beer I can't do it. You're down there this is where I know I'm going to be for the next 10 months working with everybody online so it's the same idea so just give them a place of that they can identify with and and call it their learning space because it would have to take the place of the classroom so they won't be able to get into the classroom every day and it won't be able to do the things that we would normally do in a classroom everybody I know this is no surprise or nothing new just wanted to make sure we talked about it but if you need any support there or we would try to send something home with the students will give you ideas on what to make expressing things like the numbers the alphabet is the colors of the word wall different things will will help you and your teachers will help you develop that space for you for your student any more questions so far I got today no just about the letter about being received a letter so yes if you put your email address in the chat we will send the letter out to all students parents and there is a pair of who just hear the letter within the check so I thank you so much for that just breathe so yes just completely online Garden will just come in for that first week to get an introduction to school first day of school to be a limes at this is a new environment but every student will be online virtually from now until December what about what kind of laptop stepped away am I not the brand or type of the camera in the office to be able to be on Zoom requirement for the laptop and our online platform for the students to do work and submit work back to the teacher is Google a Google Classroom so if you are familiar with Google Classroom than your head of the if not you will be receiving emails where you can do it tutorial now your students will learn it through their being in class but if you wanted to come from million with the group classroom you can talk today is it on our website yet set tutorial for Google Classroom let me check on our website for parents to use so that you can be familiar with Google class and it's really just our format in our platform for how we plan to have students to work and submit work and have work be graded and so on so far so that we won't have to worry about the exchange of paper it's not on there yet make a note within the next day or two the tutorials will be up there so you'll learn how the student should send their work back and forth question about there will not be any packets given out or I'm at the start of the fall classes we will be as dark at the Lotus stated we will be using a different platform for instruction but our main platform will be Google Play will be submitting work through Google Classroom so they will not be in packets provided for construction and with that being said if there are any parents who need internet connection or if they if they having any issues with device obviously but internet connection you want to send your information to either email me my email is on the website and it's also doctor digital put and also you can come text Miss Lucy if you are all having issues with internet connectivity to school can support you with getting internet connectivity and we hope that any student that is not it is not because they don't have any connectivity and it's not because they don't have a device so we will provide a device we will provide connectivity and we will provide the support and the training that you might need to get to get the you're stealing online and if you are in a situation where you are either in between homes or your your you know you're in between so some people have night jobs and and the kids are someplace else during the day and that and there's no internet there we camp a limited number of hotspot so we have some students who actually worked with their parents and their there they're at work and so we can provide Hotspots for a certain family as long as they have the not a lot of hot spots to eat will have to be you know demonstrated but other than that we want to make sure that there is no reason why any one of our students would not give to get on question what advice do you have for parents at work in the morning that's a great question because that was what we were going to end up with so we were talking just briefly over the last couple of weeks on Wednesdays with RP navigate you know all our our situation so you know we are a stay-at-home but working parents at this point and some of us aren't there at home working parents but our children are staying at home so how we going to deal with that I'm going to navigate that again I got that I have a sixteen-year-old my house and he's he's going to be needing me and I'm going to be here with all of my staff and they will need it so I know we all have that that what I do know is that there are some conversations being had at the state level to help parents through to child care and before and after care programs so there's it and I'm not sure if everyone is associated with the c c i s r e i e l r c now but there are helping parents are trying to help parents.
