WPACES Celebrate Black History

Black History Month is an annual observance in the United States that celebrates the achievements and contributions of African-Americans throughout history for the students at West Philadelphia Achievement Charter mentary school it is especially important to celebrate this month to acknowledge the significant impact that black people have had on the fields of Arts and Technology many African Americans have made significant contributions to the Arts and crooning Music dance either and visual arts from Jazz Legends like Louis Armstrong to hip-hop artists like Jay-Z black artists have left a permanent mark on American culture we know that black history is everyday but by celebrating Black History Month our students learned about the contributions of these great people inspiring them to pursue their own success in their desired fields at wpaces we are proud to acknowledge the the African Americans who have played a crucial role in the development of Technology how to fight again from the groundbreaking inventions of black inventors like George Washington Carver and Lewis Latimer to the contributions of contemporary Tech leaders black people have been instrumental in shaping the way we live work and communicate by highlighting these contributions during Black History Month our students here at wpaces have gained a deeper appreciation for the power of technology and its potential to transform the world they have a better understanding of their opportunities and are now inspired to pursue their own passions and dreams during Black History Month wpaces students have learned that there are more hidden figures than those extraordinary women from NASA by the names of Katherine Johnson Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan they have learned about the many other an American Technology leaders of recent years there is Kimberly Bryant who is the founder and CEO of black girls code a nonprofit organization that aims to teach young girls of color computer programming and Technology skills she has been size of the leading voice for diversity and inclusion in the tech industry then there is Mark Dean who is the computer engineer and inventor who helped develop a personal computer he is also credited with helping to develop the first color PC monitor there is Ursula Burns who is the former CEO of Iraq becoming the first black woman CEO of a Fortune 500 company 2009 she's a strong advocate for diversity inclusion in the corporate world and let's go forget Dr kizzmekia Corbett we may not all know her name but is a viral immunologist she played a key role in developing the moderna covid-19 vaccine wpaces students have learned that these individuals and many others like them a broken barriers and pays a way for future generations of African-American and technology in addition our students also looked at the Arts when you study the art you can't Overlook Misty Copeland who is the belly dancer and the first African American woman to be promoted to principal dancer at the American doll theater she has been a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion in the ballet world then there is Amy sherald who is the painter that is best known for her portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama finally come out of the world of Art and technology and focus on the world of Education there is you and there is me maybe our names will never be in a history book maybe the only history that will bear our names will be on a tombstone but is it has often been said between the dates of our birth and our death there is that Dash and for me and you that dance is symbolic of the historical work that we have done in Education for our students it's the dash that we are committed to the dash to make sure that our students cross the finish line we may not get the trophies but we will get the prize hi I'm dr. Stacey Phyllis and as we continue to keep our eyes on the prize let me take the opportunity to say that I am incredibly out of our students and staff for their commitment to Black History Month they have been engaged in various activities for a great K-5 students throughout the month culminating with an appearance on Good Day Philadelphia entering box 29th Primetime NewsHour this is an important Norman Farrar School in community and I am honored to be a part of it let us continue to celebrate and honor the achievements and contributions of African-Americans throughout history and Inspire our students to become leaders in changemakers in their own right
