The Basis of Life

Students will be introduced to the Periodic Table of Elements. All Living Things are made of Matter. Withe this, there are "Elements" or "Deposits" that exist that helps us to be as an effective country, nation and world. The Periodic Table of Elements are Elements that Naturally exists in the Earth. Many things are made up of these Elements. Your assignment is to Look at the Periodic table of Elements and do the following:

How Many Elements in total are there that make up the Periodic Table?

List three Elements, their Periodic Number and their uses. ( Here I want you to "FIND" what that element does for us. For Example: Oxygen is a gas that helps us the Breath)

Students are to watch the video and answer the questions that are attached to this file.

Due:

The Bouncing Egg

Parents, as promised here are the instructions for performing the experiment for discussion for next week. . I would recommend using two eggs, just in case something happens to one. Take both eggs right out of the cartoon and place them in vinegar; pour just enough to cover the eggs. As young Scientist, students are to record their entire experiment from start to finish. Even the part about placing a white round object called an egg into a plastic clear cup with white distilled vinegar! Yes, that detailed!
Have fun and see you next week....

Due:

Ecosystem

Students are to use the attached form as a guide to create their own Ecosystem. There are to also conduct the "Plastic Bag" experiment and record how many pencil they were able to poke through the bag. parental supervision and guidance is necessary for this unit.

Due:

Ozone Layer and the Atmosphere

Good morning students. So before this "Corona"outbreak, we talked alot about the Ozone Layer and the Atmosphere. Just to "jog" your memory; we talked about 65% of the damaging gases hurting our ozone layer comes from who? The Answer: Us. Humans. We inhale oxygen from trees and they receive carbon dioxide gas from the air. If we continue to cut down trees, we increase the amount of "bad" gases in the air that trees would normally filter out. Read the following article. I for extra credit you can answer the questions, but I want most, is your feelings regarding the article and what we know. One to two paragraphs will suffice.

P.S.
Please, please, please do not just write a line for example: " I liked the article because it was the truth". I want more than that. bring your feelings good or bad and give me something to think about! Thank you and Enjoy!!

Ecosystem

Hey Students. So, attached is a PDF file that contains the next assignment. We are going to create our own mini Ecosystem. However, in order to do so, we need some items. The first thing, you need a parent or guardian over the age of 18 to assist you in this project. Secondly, you will need (2) two-liter empty bottles, some soil (which we can get from outside with adult supervision and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment. You have one week from today to gather all of the supplies needed for the experiment.  An example of an mini ecosystem is attached. Take a look and gather all other needed materials that you will need to complete the activity.

Assignment

Good Morning Students. I have a question for you that will require some deep thought. Here is the scenario:
I was traveling to Las Vegas Nevada on a Saturday morning for one week. My flight to Las Vegas took 5 hours and 10 minutes from Philadelphia to Las Vegas. After spending a week I returned to Philadelphia on a Saturday morning; however the flight took us only 4 hours and 45 minutes on the return. List reason(s) for the difference in time for the flight. Good Luck! For some, you can ask your parents. They may know!!!

Assignment

Though it may appear to be only dirt, soil is actually a complex ecosystem composed of living and nonliving parts. The soil ecosystem is based on plant roots and decomposing organisms, which are eaten by fungi and invertebrates.Healthy soils have many invertebrates that recycle nutrients in decomposing organisms so that plants can use the nutrients again. In this experiment, the student will discover the organisms present in soils.Based on the number and variety of organisms found, the student will compare the soil samples to each other. Stay close to home and as always; get your parents permission and help!
